Nguna-Pele Marine Protected Area Project

How much do your students know about different communities and cultures and how they use the natural resources they have in their own environments? Do your students know how important it is to be able to understand the effects we as humans have on the resources we depend on and how communities need to communicate and work together to live in a more sustainable way?

Chris Bartlett and Taloa Village in Vanuatu , South Pacific will tell you all about the efforts they are making to use the resources they depend on in a sustainable way in A Solwata Story!

This documentary takes place in a small village community in Vanuatu called Taloa Village. Taloa Village is an island community that has depended on the immediate natural resources on Nguna Island for hundreds of years. Although Taloa Village has always had specific laws in place to protect their environment, due to a population increase, Taloa Village began to recognize that the impact of their community on their immediate marine environment was becoming too high. As a community they have taken action to protect and conserve their resources so that they will last for future generations by using old traditional methods in combination with the help of Peace Corps volunteer and biologist, Christopher Bartlett, to use scientific conservation processes to support their traditional laws. Some of the systems of management that are now in place are reef monitoring and protection; sea turtle tagging; trochus breeding; implementing a community awareness program; and coral mariculture. Not only is Taloa Village a great example of how to protect and use marine resources in a sustainable way, they have much to teach us about how to use water, soil and other natural resources in a sustainable and healthy way!

Key points you will learn about with this project:
