Wastewater Garden® Project

Do your students know where their water comes from and where it goes after they flush it down the toilet, sink, or shower drain? Do they know how much water on Earth can be used for drinking and what most drinking water is used for?

Dr. Mark Nelson knows the answers in A Wastewater Story!

Follow Dr. Mark Nelson as he shows you how to build a Wastewater Garden® right in the backyard of an aboriginal communities home in Western Australia. Wastewater Gardens® provide a sustainable way to treat wastewater by contributing to the conservation of fresh water resources; enhancing the natural environment with landscape beauty and biodiversity; providing food, wood and other harvestable resources from their plants; and avoiding the use of chemicals and far less machinery or electricity—all the while lasting longer than conventional sewage treatment systems and providing small habitats for other small organisms at the same time.

Key points you will learn about with this project:

  • Australian geography
  • Water resource and scarcity issues
  • Information abut different types of wastewater and cycles of waste
  • Awareness about the important role that water plays in biotic life (most importantly human life)
  • Where water comes from and the water cycle
  • What humans do to treat wastewater and problems associated with these
  • How to build Wastewater Gardens® and their advantages
