Scientific Projects

OEDSI finds scientific projects and participants with sustainability goals that meet our specified guidelines. OEDSI gives scientific projects and their participants the possibility of becoming a significant part of educational outreach in classroom settings. The scientists and project participants act as educators and role models during classes via documentaries, web-conferencing presentations and live link-ups.

Project participants should have a keen interest in engaging young minds in critical and analytical sustainable thinking skills. These skills provide students with a way to translate invaluable abstract ecological concepts into small-scale projects that are applicable in their own schools and communities. As a result, students learn how to properly manage resources and work to preserve biodiversity of life. Scientists and “real time” project disseminations empower students on an applied level and inspire them to find a voice in order to communicate ideas and information to other schools, educators, parents and local and global communities.

Schools generally do not have a choice in the projects we choose to link them with. However, special requests can be made if OEDSI is contacted at least two years in advance and there is a specific local focus needing to be addressed (i.e. acid rain, indoor air pollution, water contamination). OEDSI can also focus on specific school or scientific needs like: creating incentive for girls to participate and become more involved in the Sciences, or encouraging disabled youth to become interactive in local sustainable community projects.
